In which historical country is Assassin's Creed Origins primarily set?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed Origins is primarily set in Ancient Egypt. The game takes place during the first century BCE, near the end of the Ptolemaic period, when Cleopatra VII and her brother Ptolemy XIII compete for power.

Players control Bayek of Siwa, a Medjay who becomes involved in a conspiracy that helps inspire the formation of the Hidden Ones, the forerunners of the later Assassin Brotherhood. His wife, Aya, is also central to the story and its political conflicts.

The open world includes Alexandria, Memphis, the Nile Delta, the Giza region, and the deserts surrounding the settlements. The game combines archaeological settings with fictional characters and events, so it should not be treated as a literal history of Egypt.

Origins marked a major change in the series by introducing stronger role-playing elements, including experience levels, equipment statistics, and a large skill tree. Its title refers to the origins of the organization rather than the beginning of the entire human conflict.
