In which English county is Little Whinging, Harry Potter’s fictional home, located?

The story behind the answer

Little Whinging, J.K. Rowling’s fictional home of the Dursleys, is located in Surrey.

The suburb appears in the Harry Potter novels as the home of Harry Potter’s aunt and uncle, Petunia and Vernon Dursley, and their son Dudley. Harry lives at 4 Privet Drive before entering the wizarding world. Rowling places the fictional community in Surrey, a county immediately south and southwest of London.

Little Whinging is not a real town. It is a fictional Surrey suburb created for the books, although the setting draws on familiar features of English commuter areas. The address 4 Privet Drive became one of the series’ best-known locations because it represents Harry’s ordinary, restrictive life before Hogwarts.

Film adaptations used several real locations for exterior shots, including a house in Martins Heron, Bracknell, for the original Privet Drive exterior. That filming location is not the same thing as the fictional town’s literary location.
