Tolkien died on 2 September 1973 at the age of 81. He had been staying in Bournemouth, a coastal town in Dorset, after the death of his wife, Edith Tolkien, in 1971. His death came after decades as a university scholar, philologist, and bestselling author.

Tolkien is strongly associated with Oxford because he lived and worked there for much of his adult life, taught at the University of Oxford, and wrote significant parts of his major fiction there. That association sometimes leads people to name Oxford as his place of death.
