In which country was Patrick Brontë born?

The story behind the answer

Patrick Brontë was born in Ireland. He was born in 1777 in Emdale, near Loughbrickland in County Down, in what was then the Kingdom of Ireland.

Born Patrick Brunty, he came from a poor Irish farming family and was the eldest of ten children. Despite limited means, he taught himself and later won a place at St John's College, Cambridge, where he studied theology. During his time at Cambridge, he changed the family name from Brunty to the more distinctive Brontë.

Patrick was ordained in the Church of England and eventually became perpetual curate of Haworth in Yorkshire. There he and his wife, Maria Branwell, raised the family that included Charlotte, Emily, Anne and Branwell Brontë. The sisters later became major English novelists and poets.

A common mix-up is to identify Patrick as English because his children were born and raised in Yorkshire. His Irish birthplace is a separate fact from the family's later English literary identity.
