In which country was hockey player Wayne Gretzky born?

The story behind the answer

Wayne Gretzky was born in Canada.

Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961, in Brantford, Ontario. He grew up in a hockey-loving family and learned the game on a backyard rink built by his father, Walter Gretzky. That early practice environment helped him develop the anticipation and puck control that later became hallmarks of his career.

Known as “The Great One,” Gretzky played 20 seasons in the NHL from 1979 to 1999. He starred for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, winning four Stanley Cups with Edmonton. He remains the NHL's career leader in points and assists.

The country can be confused because Gretzky spent much of his later career in the United States and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. His birthplace, however, is Brantford, Ontario, Canada, and he represented Canada internationally. His remarkable career also helped raise hockey's profile in parts of the United States, especially after his move to Los Angeles.
