In which country is the Monaco Grand Prix held?

The story behind the answer

The Monaco Grand Prix is held in Monaco, the small sovereign principality on the French Riviera. The race uses the Circuit de Monaco, a temporary street circuit laid out through Monte Carlo and La Condamine.

The event was first organised in 1929 by Antony Noghès with support from Prince Louis II of Monaco. Its creation helped the Automobile Club de Monaco gain international recognition, and the race eventually became part of the Formula One World Championship. The inaugural modern championship edition took place in 1950.

Monaco is often confused with France because it is surrounded on three sides by French territory and lies on the Mediterranean coast near the French-Italian border. It is nevertheless an independent country, not a French city or region. The Grand Prix’s famous route passes landmarks such as Casino Square, the harbour and the tunnel, making it one of Formula One’s most recognisable races.
