In which city was the Antarctic Treaty signed in 1959?

The story behind the answer

The Antarctic Treaty was signed in Washington, D.C., in 1959.

Twelve countries that had been active in Antarctic research during the International Geophysical Year negotiated the treaty. It was signed on 1 December 1959 and entered into force in 1961.

The treaty reserves Antarctica for peaceful purposes and scientific investigation. It prohibits military measures such as establishing bases for combat operations, while allowing military personnel and equipment for scientific or other peaceful purposes.

The agreement does not settle territorial claims. Instead, it freezes the position of existing claims and prevents new claims or enlargement of claims while the treaty remains in force. The treaty system later expanded through additional agreements, including the 1991 Environmental Protocol.
