In which city was jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong born?

The story behind the answer

Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans. He was born on August 4, 1901, in a poor neighborhood known as the Battlefield, and the city’s musical culture shaped his career from childhood. Armstrong first learned the cornet while attending the Colored Waifs’ Home for Boys.

New Orleans was a major center of early jazz, with brass bands, parade music, blues, ragtime, and dance traditions all meeting there. Armstrong absorbed this environment before moving to Chicago in 1922 to join King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band.

People sometimes describe Armstrong as being born in Chicago because Chicago was crucial to his national breakthrough. His Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings were made there, but his birthplace was New Orleans. He later became one of jazz’s most influential trumpeters and singers, known worldwide for recordings such as “What a Wonderful World.”
