The world’s largest fleet of electric taxis is found in Shenzhen, China.
Shenzhen’s taxi transformation grew from a partnership between local transport operators and BYD, the Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturer headquartered in the city. The BYD e6 became a prominent taxi model, with early field testing beginning in Shenzhen in 2010. The city built charging infrastructure alongside the vehicle rollout.
By January 2019, about 99% of Shenzhen’s 21,689 licensed taxis—roughly 21,500 vehicles—were plug-in electric cars. That scale earned Shenzhen the record for the largest electric-taxi fleet. The city also electrified its buses, making it one of the most important real-world demonstrations of large-scale electric public transport.
The answer is sometimes confused with Beijing or Shanghai because both have huge taxi markets and expanding electric-vehicle programs. Shenzhen’s distinction is the size and near-total electrification of its licensed taxi fleet, not merely the number of electric taxis operating in a single trial or private company.
