The Vienna New Year's Concert is traditionally performed in Vienna each January 1.
The concert is presented by the Vienna Philharmonic in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein. Its program focuses mainly on music by the Strauss family and related composers, including waltzes, polkas, and marches. The performance is broadcast internationally and is one of the world's most recognizable classical New Year's traditions.
The first concert in the series took place on December 31, 1939, during the Second World War. From 1941 onward, the main concert was held on January 1, establishing the date now associated with the event.
The conductor changes from year to year, so the conductor is not a single permanent answer. The closing pieces traditionally include the “Blue Danube” waltz and the “Radetzky March,” although the audience's famous clapping is especially associated with the latter.
