In which city is the Council of Elrond held?

The story behind the answer

The Council of Elrond is held in Rivendell, the Elven refuge also known by its Sindarin name, Imladris. The meeting brings together representatives of Elves, Men, Dwarves, and Hobbits to decide what should be done with the One Ring.

Frodo arrives in Rivendell after being wounded by a Morgul-blade and is healed by Elrond. During the council, Elrond and the other participants hear the Ring’s history, including its connection to Sauron, Isildur, Gollum, and Bilbo Baggins. The group concludes that the Ring cannot safely be hidden or used against Sauron.

Frodo volunteers to carry it to Mordor, and Elrond later forms the Fellowship of the Ring to accompany him. In the book’s chronology, the council takes place on 25 October of the year 3018 of the Third Age.

The answer is sometimes confused with Lothlórien, another important Elven realm visited later in the journey. Mirkwood is the woodland realm ruled by Thranduil, while Minas Tirith is the great city and fortress of Gondor.
