In which city did Mahatma Gandhi begin his 1930 Salt March?
Answer
Ahmedabad
Answer
Ahmedabad
Mahatma Gandhi began the 1930 Salt March in Ahmedabad.
The march started on 12 March 1930 at Sabarmati Ashram, near Ahmedabad in Gujarat. Gandhi and 78 selected volunteers walked toward the coastal village of Dandi, about 240 miles, or roughly 390 kilometers, away. They arrived on 6 April.
At Dandi, Gandhi openly broke the British salt law by making salt from seawater. The law gave the colonial government control over salt production and taxation, making it a powerful symbol of everyday economic inequality. Salt was used by rich and poor alike, so the campaign could involve large sections of the population.
The march helped launch a wider civil-disobedience movement. Thousands were arrested, including Gandhi, and similar protests spread across India. The event attracted international attention and became one of the best-known episodes of the Indian independence struggle.
