In which city did J.K. Rowling write part of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone while living in Portugal?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling wrote part of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in Porto, Portugal.

Rowling moved to Portugal in 1991 to teach English in Porto. During her time there, she married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes. She continued developing the Harry Potter manuscript while living in the city.

Rowling later returned to the United Kingdom and completed the book in Edinburgh, Scotland. Both places are therefore associated with the novel’s creation, but Porto is the city connected with the period when she was living and writing in Portugal.

The story is sometimes simplified into a claim that Rowling wrote the entire first novel in one location. In fact, the manuscript developed over several years and in more than one city before Bloomsbury published it in 1997.
