Babe Ruth spent his childhood in Baltimore, Maryland. Born George Herman Ruth Jr., he grew up in the city before baseball carried him to Boston, New York, and international fame.

Ruth was born on February 6, 1895, at 216 Emory Street in Baltimore’s Pigtown neighborhood. His family later lived at several Baltimore addresses, including above his father’s saloon near the waterfront. His early years were difficult, and at age seven he was sent to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys in Baltimore.

At St. Mary’s, Brother Matthias introduced Ruth to structured training and helped develop his baseball skills. The school became the setting where the boy who would become “the Bambino” first attracted serious attention as an athlete.

Baltimore remained central to Ruth’s origin story even after he became famous with the Red Sox and Yankees. In 1914, he signed with the minor-league Baltimore Orioles before moving into the major leagues. His birthplace is now preserved as the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum.
