In which Canadian province is Wiarton located?

The story behind the answer

Wiarton is located in Ontario, Canada. It is a community in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, in Bruce County on the Bruce Peninsula.

The community sits at the western end of Colpoy’s Bay, an inlet of Georgian Bay. Georgian Bay forms part of Lake Huron, placing Wiarton in a region known for rugged limestone landscapes and the Niagara Escarpment. It is often described as a gateway to the Bruce Peninsula.

Wiarton is best known internationally for Wiarton Willie, an albino groundhog associated with the community’s annual Groundhog Day festival. The event began in 1956 and attracts Canadian and international media interested in Willie’s traditional winter prediction.

The province can be confused with other Canadian locations connected to marmots or winter festivals. Wiarton is not in Nova Scotia, British Columbia, or Quebec; it is in Ontario. The town of South Bruce Peninsula was formed in 1999 through municipal amalgamation, and Wiarton remains its principal community.
