In which Canadian city was the NHL founded in 1917?

The story behind the answer

In which Canadian city was the NHL founded in 1917? The National Hockey League was founded in Montreal.

The league was organized at Montreal’s Windsor Hotel on November 26, 1917. It arose from a dispute within the National Hockey Association, whose owners were struggling with Eddie Livingstone, owner of the Toronto Blueshirts. Rather than continue under the NHA’s structure, several clubs suspended that league and formed the NHL.

The founding group represented the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Quebec Bulldogs. Quebec retained membership but did not operate during the first NHL season, while a new Toronto franchise joined the competition. The league’s first games were played on December 19, 1917.

Montreal is sometimes confused with Toronto or Ottawa because both cities supplied early NHL teams and because Toronto quickly became part of the league’s story. Montreal is the correct city for the founding meeting itself. The NHL initially competed with other leagues for the Stanley Cup; it did not become the Cup’s sole major claimant until later in the 1920s.
