In which borough of New York City was rapper Tupac Shakur born?

The story behind the answer

Tupac Shakur was born in Manhattan, specifically in East Harlem, New York City.

He was born Lesane Parish Crooks on June 16, 1971, to Afeni Shakur and Billy Garland. His mother was active in the Black Panther Party, and he was renamed Tupac Amaru Shakur when he was one year old, taking a name associated with the 18th-century Indigenous South American revolutionary Túpac Amaru II.

Although Tupac was born in Manhattan, he became strongly associated with the West Coast after moving with his family to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988. That later setting shaped much of the public image surrounding his career, including his connection to Death Row Records and West Coast gangsta rap.

The borough is sometimes misremembered because Tupac’s best-known recordings and final years were tied to California and Nevada. His birthplace, however, was East Harlem, which is in Manhattan—not the Bronx, Queens, or Brooklyn.
