In which biopic did Eddie Redmayne portray Stephen Hawking?

The story behind the answer

Eddie Redmayne portrayed Stephen Hawking in the biopic The Theory of Everything. Released in 2014, the film follows Hawking’s early years as a physics student at the University of Cambridge, his relationship with Jane Wilde, and his career after he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

The screenplay was adapted from Jane Hawking’s memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen. Rather than presenting a complete scientific biography, the film focuses heavily on the couple’s marriage, family life, and the physical progression of Hawking’s illness. Redmayne prepared by studying archival interviews and photographs and meeting Hawking before filming.

Redmayne won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the performance, as well as the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild awards. The movie takes several dramatic liberties, including compressing or altering some events and relationships. Its title refers to Hawking’s ambition to find a unified explanation of the fundamental forces and laws governing the universe.
