In what year was Yves Saint Laurent born?

The story behind the answer

Yves Saint Laurent was born in 1936, on 1 August, in Oran, Algeria.

Born Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent, he grew up in a French family in colonial Algeria and showed an early interest in designing clothes and paper dolls. His talent brought him to Paris, where he studied fashion and entered the profession while still a teenager.

Saint Laurent became famous after succeeding Christian Dior as the house’s artistic director in 1957. He later launched his own label with Pierre Bergé, helping reshape modern wardrobes through ready-to-wear, safari jackets, pantsuits, and womenswear inspired by menswear.

A common mix-up is confusing his birth year with the year his fashion house began. Saint Laurent was born in 1936, while the couture house associated with his name was launched in the early 1960s.
