In what year was 'Wuthering Heights' published?
Answer
1847
Answer
1847
Wuthering Heights was published in 1847. Emily Brontë's novel appeared in London through publisher Thomas Cautley Newby on 24 November 1847.
The first edition was issued anonymously under the name Ellis Bell, Emily's pen name. It formed the first two volumes of a three-volume set, with Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey occupying the third volume. This shared publication helped preserve the sisters' secret identities while allowing both novels to reach the market.
The date is sometimes confused with 1850, when a second edition appeared. That later edition was edited by Charlotte Brontë, who also supplied a biographical preface after Emily's death. It was not the novel's original publication year. An American edition followed in 1848.
Early reviewers were divided about the book's violence, bleakness, and unconventional structure. Over time, however, its layered narration and intense treatment of love, revenge, class, and social power established Wuthering Heights as a classic of English literature. The novel's original 1847 format also differed from the single-volume editions familiar to most modern readers.
