Sony officially ended PlayStation 2 production on January 4, 2013, nearly 13 years after the console first launched in Japan in March 2000. The PS2’s long life was helped by the 2004 Slimline redesign, which made the console smaller, lighter, and easier to manufacture. Games also continued arriving after the PlayStation 3 launch. Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 was among the final releases for the system in Europe, while other regions received their own late PS2 titles.

A common mix-up is confusing the discontinuation year with the final game-release year. Both events occurred in 2013, but manufacturing officially ended in January.
