In what year was The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers released?

The story behind the answer

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was released in 2002. Peter Jackson’s second Middle-earth film premiered in New York on 5 December and opened in the United States on 18 December 2002.

The film adapts the second volume of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, following the Fellowship after its separation. Its major storylines include Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli defending Helm’s Deep; Frodo and Sam travelling toward Mordor with Gollum; and Merry and Pippin encountering the Ents.

The year is sometimes confused with 2001, when The Fellowship of the Ring was released, or 2003, when The Return of the King reached cinemas. The Two Towers was also notable for introducing Gollum as a groundbreaking digital character. At the 75th Academy Awards, it won two Oscars: Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects.
