In what year was the first Mortal Kombat film released?

The story behind the answer

The first Mortal Kombat film was released in 1995.

Mortal Kombat is a martial-arts fantasy film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. It adapts characters and ideas from the video-game series, including Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Shang Tsung. Robin Shou played Liu Kang, while Christopher Lambert portrayed Raiden.

The film follows a group of Earthrealm champions who travel to a tournament held on Shang Tsung’s island. Its plot uses the game’s tournament structure while adding original scenes and relationships for a feature-film audience.

The movie was commercially successful despite mixed critical reviews and became an important early video-game adaptation. It was followed by Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997. The later film Mortal Kombat, released in 2021, is a separate reboot rather than a continuation of the 1995 production.
