The first Jurassic Park film was released in 1993. Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel, it became a landmark in blockbuster filmmaking and digital visual effects.
Jurassic Park premiered on June 9, 1993, at the Uptown Theater in Washington, D.C., before opening widely in the United States on June 11. Its combination of computer-generated imagery, full-size mechanical creatures, suspense, and John Williams’s score helped make it a worldwide phenomenon.
The film starred Sam Neill as paleontologist Alan Grant, Laura Dern as paleobotanist Ellie Sattler, Jeff Goldblum as mathematician Ian Malcolm, and Richard Attenborough as park founder John Hammond. It won three Academy Awards, including awards for visual effects and sound.
The later films are set in the same franchise but have different release years: The Lost World: Jurassic Park arrived in 1997, Jurassic Park III in 2001, and Jurassic World in 2015. Those sequels are why 1993 is sometimes confused with 1997.
