The first Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta was held in 1972.
The event began in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as part of celebrations for radio station KOB’s 50th anniversary. The inaugural gathering featured 13 balloons, a modest beginning compared with the enormous mass ascensions associated with the fiesta today.
The festival expanded rapidly and became a major international meeting for balloon pilots, crews, and spectators. Albuquerque’s high desert setting, broad open spaces, and generally favorable autumn weather helped make it a practical location for repeated launches. The surrounding Sandia Mountains also contribute to local wind patterns used by pilots.
The fiesta is often described as the world’s largest balloon festival, but that title should not obscure its small origin. Its growth took place over decades, with far more balloons, special shapes, competitions, and public events added after the 1972 debut.
