In what year was The Emoji Movie released?

The Emoji Movie was released in 2017.

The animated comedy premiered in the United States on 28 July 2017. Directed by Tony Leondis, it is set inside a smartphone and follows Gene Meh, an emoji who can display multiple expressions rather than only the emotion assigned to him.

T.J. Miller voices Gene, while Anna Faris voices Jailbreak and James Corden voices Hi-5. The story uses familiar phone apps and emoji conventions as locations and plot devices, turning the interface of a smartphone into a fictional world.

The film is distinct from documentaries and short films about emoji history. It was a major studio animated feature built around the popularity of emoji in digital communication. Reviews were largely negative, but the movie remains notable as the first major feature film centered specifically on emoji characters and their imagined digital home.
