In what year was the British television series Dragons' Den first broadcast?

The story behind the answer

Dragons' Den was first broadcast in 2005.

The BBC launched the British version on 4 January 2005. The programme places entrepreneurs in front of wealthy investors, known as Dragons, who decide whether to offer money for a share of a business.

The format combines a business presentation with negotiation. Contestants usually explain their product, state how much investment they want, and name the percentage of their company they are prepared to give away. The Dragons can ask detailed questions about sales, costs, ownership and valuation.

The British programme is part of an international television format that has been adapted in many countries. Its title uses the word “dragons” for powerful investors, while the Japanese original used “tigers”. The series is often confused with later spin-offs and international editions, but the UK programme began specifically in 2005.
