The Assassin's Creed feature film was released in 2016.
Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film premiered in December 2016 and adapts the video-game franchise into an original science-fiction action story. Michael Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, a modern man who uses the Animus to experience memories inherited from his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha, an Assassin active in fifteenth-century Spain.
The film's historical sequences take place during the Spanish Inquisition and include Aguilar's conflict with Templars. Its modern storyline involves Abstergo Industries and a plan connected to the Apple of Eden, one of the franchise's recurring Pieces of Eden. Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams, and Ariane Labed also appear.
The movie is not a direct retelling of Altaïr's or Ezio's game campaigns. It uses familiar concepts, including genetic memories, the Animus, Assassins, and Templars, while introducing Callum and Aguilar as film-specific central characters. The release followed several earlier plans for a film adaptation and marked the franchise's first major live-action feature.
