Pirate Stede Bonnet was executed in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1718.
Bonnet was a wealthy Barbados landowner and militia major who turned to piracy in 1717. Because he had little maritime experience, he purchased and equipped the sloop Revenge rather than building a career at sea from the beginning. His unusual background led later writers to call him the Gentleman Pirate.
After losing command of his vessel and briefly sailing with Blackbeard, Bonnet attempted to resume piracy. Authorities captured him near the Cape Fear River and brought him to Charleston for trial. He was convicted and hanged at White Point, Charleston, on 10 December 1718.
