Nvidia, now among the world’s most valuable companies, was founded in 1993.
Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem established Nvidia in 1993. The company initially focused on graphics-processing technology for computer games and professional visualization, later expanding into data centers, automotive systems, and artificial intelligence.
Nvidia’s rise in market capitalization was closely linked to the growing importance of graphics processing units, or GPUs. Although GPUs were first associated mainly with rendering images, their parallel-processing architecture also made them valuable for machine learning and large-scale computing.
Nvidia went public in 1999. Its later prominence in AI infrastructure means the company is sometimes mistakenly described as an AI startup; it is actually a hardware and software company with roots in the 1990s personal-computer graphics market.
