In what year was NHL star Henrik Lundqvist born?

The story behind the answer

Henrik Lundqvist was born in 1982. The Swedish goaltender was born on March 2, 1982, in Åre, Sweden, and later became one of the most accomplished European-born players in NHL history.

Lundqvist spent his entire NHL career with the New York Rangers, playing 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020. He quickly became the team’s starting goaltender and earned the nickname “King Henrik” for his consistency, style, and importance to the franchise.

He won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goaltender in 2012 and helped Sweden win Olympic gold at the 2006 Winter Games. He was also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023, recognizing his international and professional career.

A common mix-up is confusing Henrik with his identical twin brother, Joel Lundqvist, who also became a professional hockey player. Henrik played goaltender, while Joel was a forward. Henrik was selected 205th overall by the Rangers in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
