In what year was My Neighbor Totoro released?

The story behind the answer

My Neighbor Totoro was released in 1988.

Hayao Miyazaki wrote and directed the film for Studio Ghibli, with its Japanese theatrical release taking place on April 16, 1988. The story follows sisters Satsuki and Mei Kusakabe, who move to the countryside while their mother receives medical treatment. There, they encounter forest spirits, including the gentle creature Mei calls Totoro.

The film was released on a double bill with Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies, another Studio Ghibli production. That pairing is now remembered as one of animation’s most notable theatrical double features. Totoro’s rural setting, magical creatures, and themes of family, nature, and childhood helped make the film an enduring classic.

A common mix-up is confusing the original release year with later international releases or English-dub premieres. The Disney English dub arrived much later, but the film itself debuted in Japan in 1988. Totoro also became Studio Ghibli’s mascot and one of its most recognizable characters.
