The Hamburglar was introduced as a McDonaldland character in 1971.
The character was designed as a mischievous figure who tried to steal hamburgers, making the name itself a playful combination of “hamburger” and “burglar.” His striped clothing, mask, and exaggerated behavior made him easy for children to recognize in television advertising.
The Hamburglar was part of a broader McDonaldland world that included Ronald McDonald, Mayor McCheese, Grimace, and other fictional figures. This approach turned the brand’s advertising into a continuing story rather than a series of unrelated product commercials.
The character’s design changed over time. Early versions looked more like a small adult burglar, while later advertising presented the Hamburglar as a child-sized character with a simpler, more cartoon-like appearance.
