In what year was Joan of Arc born?

The story behind the answer

Joan of Arc was born around 1412.

Joan was born in Domrémy, a village in northeastern France, during the Hundred Years’ War. Her exact birth date is not recorded, so historians usually give the year as about 1412 rather than a precise day and month.

She grew up in a farming family while France was divided by conflict with England and its Burgundian allies. As a teenager, Joan said that religious visions had urged her to support the French heir, Charles, later King Charles VII.

The year 1412 is widely used in biographies, although some older sources suggest 1410 or 1411. Those alternatives reflect uncertainty in medieval records, not a different established biography. Joan’s age is therefore often described as approximately 17 when she reached the French court in 1429.
