In what year was 'Jane Eyre' published?
Answer
1847
Answer
1847
Jane Eyre was published in 1847. Charlotte Brontë's novel appeared in London on 19 October 1847 through the publisher Smith, Elder & Co., initially titled Jane Eyre: An Autobiography and attributed to the pseudonymous author Currer Bell.
The book was Charlotte's second completed novel. Her earlier manuscript, The Professor, had been rejected, but Smith, Elder & Co. encouraged her to submit another work. Jane Eyre quickly attracted attention for its first-person narrative, emotional intensity and portrayal of a young woman's struggle for independence, morality and love.
The date can be confused with 1848 because the first American edition was published in January 1848. It can also be mixed up with other Brontë publications: Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey were both published in 1847, while Charlotte's Shirley appeared in 1849. The original 1847 edition was issued in three volumes, a common publishing format for Victorian novels.
