He was born on 11 July 1934 in Piacenza, a city in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. His parents were Ugo Armani, an accountant for a transport company, and Maria Raimondi. He grew up with an older brother, Sergio, and a younger sister, Rosanna.

Armani’s early life did not obviously point toward fashion. He studied medicine at the University of Milan for three years, then left university and completed military service. His first fashion-related work came at the Milan department store La Rinascente, where he worked as a window dresser and later became involved in menswear buying and sales.

The year 1934 is sometimes mixed up with 1975, the year Armani founded his own fashion company, or 1980, when the film American Gigolo helped make his design style internationally famous. Armani died in Milan on 4 September 2025, aged 91.
