In what year was C.S. Lewis’s novel The Silver Chair first published?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s novel The Silver Chair was first published in 1953. It is the fourth book in the internal chronological sequence of The Chronicles of Narnia, although it was the sixth Narnia book Lewis published.

The story follows Eustace Scrubb and Jill Pole, who are sent into Narnia by Aslan to find the missing Prince Rilian. Much of the quest takes place beneath the surface of Narnia, where the travelers encounter the Lady of the Green Kirtle and the dangerous underground realm.

The publication order can cause confusion. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe appeared in 1950, followed by Prince Caspian in 1951, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 1952, The Silver Chair in 1953, The Horse and His Boy in 1954, The Magician’s Nephew in 1955, and The Last Battle in 1956.

The Silver Chair was illustrated by Pauline Baynes, whose artwork also accompanied the other original Narnia books. Its publication marked the midpoint of the series’ original release run.
