In what year was C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity first published as a book?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity was first published as a book in 1952.

The volume grew out of radio talks Lewis gave for the BBC during the Second World War. The broadcasts were delivered between 1941 and 1944 and were later revised and assembled into a single work explaining common Christian beliefs.

Mere Christianity is divided into sections that discuss morality, Christian doctrine, and Christian conduct. Lewis aimed to describe what he called the “common” or central beliefs shared across many Christian traditions rather than defend one denomination.

The book is not a novel and does not belong to the Narnia series. It became one of Lewis’s most widely read works of Christian apologetics, alongside The Problem of Pain and Miracles.
