In what year was Albert Einstein born?

The story behind the answer

Albert Einstein was born in 1879. He was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, in the Kingdom of Württemberg, then part of the German Empire.

Einstein grew up in a secular Jewish family and spent much of his youth in Munich before moving to Switzerland. He later studied at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich and became a Swiss citizen. In 1905, while working at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern, he published several groundbreaking papers on topics including special relativity, Brownian motion, and the quantum theory of light.

The year 1879 is sometimes confused with dates connected to Einstein’s later achievements. His famous “miracle year” was 1905, he completed his doctorate that year, and he received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics. He did not receive the Nobel for relativity, but for his explanation of the photoelectric effect.

Einstein lived until April 18, 1955, dying in Princeton, New Jersey. Thus, his lifespan was 76 years, spanning the German Empire, two world wars, and the rise of modern physics.
