In what year did UNESCO list the Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila?

The story behind the answer

UNESCO listed the Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila as a World Heritage Site in 2006.

The site covers an extensive cultural landscape in Jalisco, including blue agave fields, historic industrial facilities, haciendas, and settlements connected with tequila production. It represents more than a drink: it records centuries of agriculture, processing, trade, and community life.

UNESCO recognized the landscape’s long history of cultivating and using agave. The nomination also includes evidence of older traditions that predate modern industrial tequila, along with the evolution of distillation and commercial production.

The designation is sometimes described simply as the “Tequila” World Heritage Site. It does not mean every tequila bottle comes from one historic factory; rather, it protects a broader cultural and agricultural region associated with the spirit.
