Tommy Hilfiger launched the Tommy Jeans label in 1996.
Tommy Jeans was created as a more casual, youth-oriented line within the wider Tommy Hilfiger fashion business. Its designs drew on American sportswear, denim and prominent branding, while retaining the red, white and blue visual identity associated with the parent label. The collection became particularly visible during the late 1990s, when hip-hop artists and other entertainers helped make relaxed denim and logo-heavy casualwear fashionable.
Tommy Hilfiger had established his namesake company in 1985, initially focusing on modern interpretations of classic American clothing. The Tommy Jeans line extended that approach toward younger shoppers and everyday clothing. Although the name contains “Jeans,” the label has included more than denim, such as tops, jackets and accessories.
Tommy Jeans is sometimes confused with the main Tommy Hilfiger line because both use related branding. The 1996 launch date refers specifically to Tommy Jeans, not to the founding of the Tommy Hilfiger company itself.
