In what year did the Panama Canal expansion open, allowing Neopanamax ships?

The story behind the answer

The Panama Canal expansion opened in 2016, allowing Neopanamax ships to use the enlarged waterway. The new locks officially began commercial operations on June 26, 2016, when the container ship COSCO Shipping Panama made the inaugural transit.

The project added larger lock complexes at both the Atlantic and Pacific entrances and created a parallel channel system. Its locks use water-saving basins to recycle freshwater, while the expanded Gatún Lake channel was deepened and widened for larger vessels. Neopanamax ships can carry far more containers than the original Panamax design allowed.

A common mix-up is confusing the expansion with the original canal opening. The first canal opened in 1914, after construction by the United States followed an earlier failed French effort. Another misconception is that every large ship can transit: vessel dimensions, draft, and operating conditions still have to meet the canal’s limits. The 2016 expansion reshaped shipping routes, especially for container traffic between Asia, the United States East Coast, and the Gulf Coast.
