Shrek the Musical opened on Broadway in 2008.

The stage adaptation began Broadway previews in November 2008 and officially opened at the Broadway Theatre on December 14, 2008. It was based primarily on the first Shrek film, while also incorporating material from William Steig’s picture book.

The musical featured a score by Jeanine Tesori and a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire. Brian d’Arcy James played Shrek in the original Broadway cast, with Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona. The production received eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and won awards for its costumes and direction.
