In what year did the McDonald’s golden arches first appear on a restaurant building?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s golden arches first appeared on a restaurant building in 1953.

The arches were architectural elements on the McDonald brothers’ new restaurant design in Phoenix, Arizona. They were intended to make the roadside building highly visible and distinctive to passing motorists.

The arches were not initially the corporate logo. Their later transformation into the familiar M-shaped emblem happened when McDonald’s designer Jim Schindler combined the two arches in 1962. This is why 1953 and 1962 are both important dates in Golden Arches history, but they describe different stages.

The architectural arches eventually became more valuable as a brand symbol than as a building feature. Their bright color, repeated curve, and simple shape made them easy to reproduce on signs, packaging, uniforms, and advertising around the world.
