In what year did the Ford Mustang first offer the 'GT' performance package?

The story behind the answer

The Ford Mustang first offered its GT performance package in 1965.

Ford introduced the Mustang GT as the GT Equipment Group during the 1965 model year. It bundled performance-oriented features including a V8 engine, grille-mounted fog lamps, rocker-panel stripes, front disc brakes, and a five-dial instrument panel. Buyers could order the package on the Mustang’s available body styles rather than purchasing an entirely separate model line.

The package helped distinguish a more sporting Mustang from the economical six-cylinder versions that powered the car’s enormous early sales. A four-barrel V8 was available, while the related Shelby GT350 arrived in 1965 as a much more specialized, track-focused performance car built by Shelby American.

The “1964½” label can create confusion because production began in March 1964 and the Mustang went on sale that spring, even though Ford marketed these early cars primarily as 1965 models. The GT package was available through 1969, disappeared for several years, and returned for the 1982 model year.
