In what year did the British BBC business show Dragons' Den first premiere?

The story behind the answer

The British television show Dragons' Den first premiered in 2005.

The programme debuted on BBC Two on 4 January 2005, adapting the Japanese business format Money Tigers through the international Dragons' Den format. Entrepreneurs, often called pitchers, present business ideas to wealthy investors and request funding in exchange for equity.

The original panel included Peter Jones, Duncan Bannatyne, Rachel Elnaugh, Doug Richard and Simon Woodroffe. The series became one of the BBC's best-known factual-entertainment programmes and later moved to BBC One.

The premiere year is sometimes confused with the launch dates of overseas versions. Canada, Ireland, Australia and other countries developed their own editions at different times. The British edition itself began in 2005, making that the relevant date for questions about the original UK series.
