The Boeing 777 entered commercial service in 1995 with United Airlines.
The twin-engine wide-body aircraft first flew on June 12, 1994, after Boeing developed it as a larger long-range complement to the 767. United Airlines operated the first commercial 777 flight on June 7, 1995, from London Heathrow to Washington Dulles.
The 777 was designed around airline requests for a high-capacity twinjet with long range and lower operating costs than older three- and four-engine wide-body aircraft. Its development also introduced extensive use of computer-aided design and a digital fly-by-wire control system.
The 777’s first commercial-service year is sometimes confused with its first-flight year, 1994. Another nearby milestone is the 777-300, which entered service in 1998 as a stretched version of the original 777-200.
