Serena Williams won her first Wimbledon singles title in 2002. She defeated her sister Venus Williams 7–6 (7–4), 6–3 in the final at the All England Club.
Venus had won the two previous Wimbledon singles championships, so Serena’s victory ended her sister’s two-year reign. It was Serena’s third Grand Slam singles title overall and her first Wimbledon crown. She completed the tournament without losing a set and became the world No. 1 singles player for the first time by winning the title.
The 2002 triumph was also part of Serena’s first “Serena Slam,” the achievement of holding all four major singles titles at once across two calendar years. Earlier that season, she had won the French Open, so taking Wimbledon created a Channel Slam—the first since Steffi Graf achieved the same feat in 1996. Serena and Venus also won the women’s doubles title together that year.
