In what year did pirate Henry Morgan die?
Answer
1688
Answer
1688
Pirate Henry Morgan died in 1688.
Henry Morgan was a Welsh privateer who led raids against Spanish settlements in the Caribbean during the seventeenth century. His most famous operation was the 1671 attack on Panama, then one of Spain’s major American possessions. Morgan’s activities were authorized by England during periods of war with Spain, although Spanish authorities regarded him as a pirate.
After returning to England, Morgan was knighted by King Charles II in 1674 and later became lieutenant governor of Jamaica. He lived in Jamaica during his final years and died there in 1688. His death came before the period usually called the Golden Age of Piracy, which is commonly placed from the late seventeenth century into the 1720s.
Morgan is often grouped with later pirates because his reputation shaped popular ideas about Caribbean piracy. However, he was primarily a privateer: a state-authorized raider operating under a commission. That legal distinction separated him, at least formally, from pirates such as Blackbeard and Bartholomew Roberts.
