Nike SB released the first SB Dunk in 2002.
The Nike Dunk originally debuted in 1985 as a basketball shoe. Nike later adapted the model for skateboarding under its Nike SB division, adding features intended for skaters, including a padded tongue and Zoom Air cushioning in the insole. The SB Dunk’s 2002 arrival helped turn the classic basketball silhouette into a major skate and streetwear platform.
Nike SB developed the shoe with input from professional skateboarders and used limited colorways and collaborations to build interest. Early models included designs connected to skateshops and influential skate graphics, helping establish the collectible culture now associated with SB Dunks.
The ordinary Nike Dunk and the Nike SB Dunk are related but not identical. The SB version was specifically configured for skateboarding, while the original Dunk was designed for basketball.
